Al-Balad — Historic Jeddah — is the original walled city at the edge of the Red Sea, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Its defining architectural language is the Rawasheen: intricately carved wooden lattice screens projecting from coral-stone merchant houses.
